Many Cars Hit by Stone Attacks in Petchaburi, Chumphon
UPDATE : 18 August 2009

Several vehicles were damaged in stone-throwing attacks on a road in Petchaburi Province while a similar incident also took place in Chumphon Province.

A rescue team in Chumphon gave first aid to Samrit Sukwilai who suffered head injuries when his vehicle's windshield was shattered by a thrown stoner. The incident occurred on Phetkasem Road in Thasae District.

Stone attacks on moving vehicles have continuously been reported on Phetkasem and Asia 41 roads in Chumphon since the beginning of August. Thirty vehicles were reportedly damaged since then.

In the meantime, stone-throwing incidents have also been reported in Petchaburi Province on the section of Phetkasem ྪÃà¡ÉÁ Road from Khao Yoi to Muang District.

Truck driver Thawatchai Sae-ngao said he heard an object hitting his truck's windshield but it did not break. He believes that the object that hit his windshield was not a stone because it caused a smaller hole than that normally found on vehicles hit by a thrown stone.

Further investigation into earlier cases revealed that the attacks took place in the areas connecting Ratchaburi and Petchaburi provinces. Police said the same gang is believed to have been behind the attacks.

Police Major General Wirat Wacharakajorn, commander of Petchaburi provincial police, said at least seven cases of stone throwing and slingshot attacks in the same vicinity have been reported. Police are urging any other victims to come foward and report their cases. Accurate reports of times and places of every incident can be used to identify suspects and gather evidence to arrest them. Witnesses and victims can call the Police Hotline at 191.

The commander said checkpoints have been set up in many areas to closely watch and investigate the dubious motorcycle riders.

The strict security came out of concern over possible impact of the crime on tourism and foreigners' confidence in security during the run-up to the ASEAN summit in October.
