Minister Vetoes Expert's Resignation
The interior minister has asked a key specialist not to resign from the Strategic Committee for Water Resources Management. He has also given an explanation behind the appointment of Padung Limchareonrat as his secretary. Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Yongyuth Wichaidit said he has asked Smith Thammasaroj to continue to work with the Strategic Committee for Water Recources Mamagement.
Noted Academic Denies Link to Nitirat Group
A former leader of the student uprising in the mid 70's has insisted he has no involvement with the Nitirat Group's campaign to amend the lese majeste law. Former leader of the student uprising against military rulers decades ago Seksan Prasertkul said in a statement to the press that he does not have a leading role in the Campaign Committee for the Amendment of the Criminal Code's Article 112 even though his name appeared on the member list.
Defense Minister Reserved on Amending Lese Majeste Law
The defense minister has declined to comment on the proposed amendment of the lese majeste law, saying it's a political matter. Defense Minister Air Chief Marshal Sukampol Suwanatat commented on the amendment of the Criminal Code Article 112 on lese majeste, saying it is a political matter and he doesn't want to get involved. As for Army Chief General Prayuth Chan-ocha's comments on the matter, Sukampol said it is the army chief's personal right to speak, but he will not comment on Prayuth's views.

Dam on Early Alert against Floods
Officials at the Bhumibol Dam say that in order to properly prepare for the upcoming rainy-season, water management strategies are being adjusted and they are now releasing the water to make room for more downpours. Director of the Bhumibol Dam in Tak's Samngao District Narong Thaiprayoon said the water level at Bhumibol Dam has been decreased to 85 percent of the dam's capacity or around 11.5 billion cubic meters of water.

Banks to Maintain Interest Rate
Commercial banks will be maintaining their deposit and lending rates for the time being despite the central bank's policy rate cut, as they fear lowering the rates will lead to money disappearing from the banking system. Krung Thai Bank President Apisak Tantiworawong said following the move by the Bank of Thailand's Monetary Policy Committee to cut the policy rate by 25 basis points to 3 percent, that banks will have to consider the situation before following suit.
Commerce Ministry Vows to Continue Rice Pledging Scheme
The Commerce Ministry plans to continue the rice-pledging scheme, while the Thai Rice Packers Association is threatening to increase rice prices. Commerce Permanent Secretary Yanyong Phuangrach has announced that the Commerce Ministry will extend the rice-pledging scheme, as the 2011 rice-pledging program is set to be terminated on February 29.

The prime minister is attending the World Economic Forum in Switzerland and meeting with leading business people to clarify Thailand's flood recovery plan. Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra is in Davos, Switzerland today to take part in the 42nd World Economic Forum.
