Mandara is derived from the ancient Sanskrit legend of Mandara Giri, a sacred mountain from which the ‘elixir of life’ is said to flow, offering the secret of eternal youth.

Mandara Spa, a Bangkok city spa managed by Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa, aims to satisfy customers’ wellness aspirations through the provision of quality treatments and services tailored to the needs of busy city residents in need of quality rest and relaxation.

Nestled in Bangkok Marriott Resort & Spa’s tropical gardens, Mandara Spa appeals to local tastes by using a combination of Balinese designs. Its two luxurious Mandara Suites include a private garden, an outdoor shower and a Thai pavilion, where you can relax during a treatment. Each suite also includes an en suite Jacuzzi, a dressing room and a shower room.

Deluxe rooms are used for specific treatments, such as traditional Thai massage and other forms of massage or therapy, such as Ayurvedic, aromatic and Swedish options.

Easing tension
Since promoting the idea of an extended youth is at the core of Mandara Spa’s mission, initial efforts focus on reducing tension. The spa’s signature aroma comes from lemon grass, an essential form of Thai oil that not only helps ease stresses and strains, but also provides an extremely refreshing sensation. A glass of cold lemon grass tea and a refreshing towel, which also features a hint of lemon grass essential oil, ensures the experience is in tune with the overall theme.

There are seasonal adjustments in terms of the drink provided, such as the inclusion of Bael fruit juice during summer months [March to June], and hot ginger tea during the winter [October to February].

Stylistic blend
The one hour Mandara Signature Massage (4,400 baht [US$133]) provides an exotic blend of five massage styles, including Balinese, Hawaiian (Lomo Lomi), Shiatsu, along with Swedish and Thai forms.

Balinese is beneficial for stretching your muscle tissue, featuring long sliding movements generated by the therapist’s palms. Lomo Lomi from Hawaii involves the use of the therapist's forearms, massaging and sliding in rhythmic movements.

Shiatsu is the use of finger pressure, Japanese-style. Swedish massage focuses on kneading and effleurage techniques, using aromatic oil as a component, whereas Thai massage uses the therapists' palms in helping the skin to absorb the oil.

Four hands, one focus
The highlight of the Mandara Signature Massage is that it is prepared with two therapists, using ‘four hands’ to ensure a deep sense of rejuvenation. You may not always notice all four hands at work, such is the deep state of relaxation you are likely to experience for a large part of the time.

The synchronization of the two therapists’ movements uses a technique established in Bali, based on the fundamental belief that human beings should be ‘as one’, since we were all created from the same element. The two therapists use a technique in which they strive to match each other’s breathing and utilize their combined energy to work in harmony.

Mandara Spa also has a wide range of other interesting massage therapies on offer, such as a one hour Aroma Stone Therapy Massage (5,520 baht), a one hour Body Detox Massage (3,600 baht), and a one hour Indian Head Massage (2,700 baht).
