Guards Confined for Phattalung Ammunition Theft
UPDATE : 9 March 2010
The Army Chief has stated that those behind the Army base ammunition theft in Phattalung will be hunted down. Meanwhile, the guards have been confined, pending an investigation.

Royal Thai Army Spokesperson, Colonel Sansern Kaewkamnerd revealed that the Region 4 Army has formed a committee to investigate the recent ammunition theft at an armory in Phattalung province.

From their initial investigation, authorities believe that it was an “inside job” that was done in haste.

The police officers and the forensics team are conducting a thorough sweep of the crime scene.

All of the Army guards involved have been confined inside the base for interrogation.

Commander of the Royal Thai Army, Anupong Paojinda has called for a meeting with all regional Army commanders and has ordered that security measures at all Army's armories be strengthened. Anupong is insistent that someone be held accountable for the incident.

Anupong also played down claims that the armed forces have been trying to hide information regarding the incident from the public, saying that they are simply following protocol.

The Red-Shirts have also raised suspicions that the Army itself may have been the one responsible for the theft in order to create a distraction.

The Army Chief repudiated these claims, saying the military and the police would never do such a thing.
