64 Industrial Projects Undertake Health Impact Assessment
UPDATE : 9 March 2010
Sixty-four industrial projects, mostly in Rayong's Map Ta Phut Industrial Settlement, are doing a Health Impact Assessment, in response to the new guidelines published by the National Health Commission.

National Health Commission, or NHC, Secretary-General, Dr. Amphon Jindawatthana, revealed that 64 industrial projects are conducting a public survey to examine the community health impact of their projects, following the announcement of Health Impact Assessment guidelines.

Of the total 57 projects based in the eastern province of Rayong, most are in the Map Ta Phut industrial estate.

Amphon said public scoping is a new tool in the assessment process, which allows members of the public to voice concerns and raise questions regarding possible health impacts of particular industrial projects.

He said project owners or agencies hired to oversee the implementation of HIA are obliged to take public comments into consideration, adjust the projects accordingly and have it reviewed by the public once more.

The Secretary-General added that NHC, which was established in 2008 under the National Health Assembly resolution, has been monitoring community health problems caused by industrial projects.

He noted that at its latest meeting, the panel resolved to propose the designation of a buffer zone between the industrial and residential areas.
