Central Bank to Watch Financial System during Protests
UPDATE : 11 March 2010
The central bank confirms the country's financial system can continue as usual during the red-shirt protests while Bangkok Bank believes the government will be able to control the situation.

Bangkok Bank Executive Chairman Kosit Panpiemras said he has no worry about the upcoming protests of anti-government red-shirt supporters and all Bangkok Bank branches will continue operating on Friday as normal.

Kosit said he believes that the Internal Security Act announced by the government will be able to control the situation while the bank is ready to cooperate with the state.

Bangkok Bank President Chartsiri Sophonpanich reiterated that Thailand's economy is improving thanks to the revival of the global economy which helped boost the country's export.

Chartsiri estimated that the Thai economy will expand around four to five per cent this year.

Meanwhile, the Bank of Thailand has prepared measures for cases of emergency during the red-shirt protests from March 12 to 14 to keep the country's financial system from being disrupted, particularly money transfers.

If the central bank compound is blockaded by the protesters, officials will be evacuated by land and boat for safety. They might be able to work at home in the case of a seige on the central bank.
