Deputy PM Rules Out Coup

The deputy prime minister in charge of national security and the Army chief confirm that the government is fully prepared to deal with the upcoming red-shirt rally and emphasize that a coup will not happen even if bloodshed occurs.

Deputy Prime Minister in charge of national security Suthep Thaugsuban and the Army chief confirmed that they are fully prepared for the mass red-shirt rally.


Suthep and Army chief General Anupong Paochinda reiterated that a military coup will not happen even if the protests turn violent.

Today, samples of uniforms for each security division were put on public display to show security readiness.

Security forces will not carry weapons except for a shield and baton and anyone posing as a law-enforcement official will be prosecuted.

Crowd-control forces will also be equipped with shields and batons while inspection and traffic forces will carry holstered weapons. A special unit will step in when unrest breaks out.

Meanwhile, the possibility of shutting down the red-shirt PTV station is still being discussed by the interior and justice ministries. Nonetheless, the government urged PTV to act accordingly to the law.
