DSI Chief Files Libel Suit Against Red-Shirt Leader
UPDATE : 28 July 2010
The Department of Special Investigation Chief has filed a defamation lawsuit against a key red-shirt leader, for alleging that his wife asked for a bribe from a business when she worked for the Revenue Department in exchange for the settlement of a tax evasion case.

Department of Special Investigation, or DSI, Chief Tharit Pengdit and his wife Wasamol filed a defamation suit against Pheu Thai Party MP and core red-shirt leader Jatuporn Phromphan, claiming that Tharit's wife demanded 150,000 baht in bribe from a businessman to clear tax evasion charges against him, when she was an official at the Revenue Department.

The DSI chief said the faulty claim is aimed at discrediting him.

Tharit added he expects more accusations against him in the future, acknowledging that he is currently being targeted by several groups of people, including officials in the Justice Ministry, and even within his own agency.

He said he will simply explain himself to clarify the issue, and does not intend to draw attention.

Meanwhile, Karom Poltaklang, a lawyer representing the People's Alliance for Democracy, said Jatuporn, who is also facing terrorist allegations, has the right to scrutinize the work of a public official.

He believes there is enough evidence to prove his allegation true.
