Tripartite Committee to Discuss Effects of Rising Costs
UPDATE : 6 May 2008

A joint private-sector committee is meeting today to discuss the effects of higher costs and what assistance they might need from the government.

Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) chairman Santi Vilassakdanont said that today the Joint Private Committee, which comprises FTI, the Thai Chamber of Commerce (TCC) and the Thai Bankers Association (TBA) would meet today to discuss how the business sector has been affected by rising costs.

The committee hopes that today’s discussion would help them identify the types of assistance the private sector would need from the government.

Skyrocketing energy price has taken its toll on both business operators and consumers for some time.

Now with the country’s minimum wages set to rise further next month, many are now expecting goods and service prices to increase even further.

The meeting would also evaluate the effectiveness of recent state assistance given to businesses in the three southern border provinces and its setting up of SME fund.

Santi added that members of the food business are also finalizing their report on the effect of higher prices to be submitted for government consideration, especially after it has green-lighted an increase of sugar price by five baht a kilo last week.
