Supreme Court Accepts Exim Bank Loan Case against Thaksin
UPDATE : 30 July 2008

Thailand's high court has agreed to accept the case involving irregularities surrounding the Export-Import Bank loan to Burma, which was authorized by former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

The Supreme Court decided on Wednesday to consider the Exim Bank loan case against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinwatra.

The case was filed by the now-defunct Assets Examination Committee.

The AEC accused Thaksin of abusing his position to order a one billion baht increase in the amount of loans to Burma, allegedly for the benefit of his family's satellite and broadband businesses.

A total of four billion baht was extended to the Burmese government to improve its infrastructure and telecom sector in 2004. The loan approval reportedly bore the condition that the Burmese government would purchase materials from the Shinawatra family's Shin Corp.

The high court's Criminal Division of Political Office Holders has scheduled September 16th for the first hearing of witnesses.

It also agreed to allow the National Counter Corruption Commission to perform the plaintiff's role in the case, as the AEC no longer exists.

This is the third graft case linked to Thaksin. His first litigation is the Ratchadapisek land case and the second is the 2 and 3 digit lottery case.
