The House speaker has advised the government to dissolve the House if its draft bill on the mid-year budget fails to win the vote. The draft bill on the mid-year central budget for economic stimulus plans has been brought to the House of Representatives for the second and third reading today. Government Whip Chief, Chinnavorn Boonyakiet said today's House deliberation on the draft budget bill should be concluded before midnight. Political parties also held a meeting today at 10am to select members for each of 35 House committees, comprised of 15 MPs each. House Speaker Chai Chidchob revealed that 69 MPs have filed motions seeking the amendment of the draft bill on the mid-year central budget. He cited that the lack of quorum in the vote on the draft bill will have a negative impact on the government as each of its articles must receive a majority vote. He said the government's loss of the vote will result in its proposed law in being shot down and it will have to dissolve the House of Representatives. Meanwhile, Chairman of the Opposition Whip, Witthaya Buranasiri asked the government to clarify the source of the mid-year budget with the House. He stated that the budget should come from the surplus of the targeted collection of the state revenue, but the Democrat-led coalition used lending money for its economic stimulus package instead. Deputy House Speaker and key member of the opposition Pheu Thai Party, Apiwan Lerdviriyachai revealed that a no-confidence debate against the prime minister and some Cabinet members will be brought to the agenda of his party's meeting next week. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva chaired the meeting of economic ministers to draw policies on labour measures, credit guarantee schemes, and packages to promote tourism. Today's meeting of economic ministers was held at Parliament --instead of at Government House-- to facilitate ruling MPs attending today's House deliberation on the budget draft bill in time to avoid a lack of quorum. |
