Police officers are questioned by a key member of the People's Alliance for Democracy about their political neutrality in fulfilling their duties after the media circulated photos of some officers wearing red t-shirts at the anti-government red-shirt protest. On his talk-show this morning, People’s Alliance for Democracy key leader Sondhi Limthongkul denounced those police officers photographed lining up to obtain red t-shirts during the anti-government rally on Monday. Sondhi said the photos were clear evidence that Deputy Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police Bureau Police Major General Amnuay Nimmano lied to the people when he said police were always politically neutral and took no side in the current conflict. Red is the color of the anti-government Democratic Alliance against Dictatorship, also known as the red-shirt group. Meanwhile, Sondhi said exiled former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra had created a police state during his tenure which resulted in many problems for the country. He urged Deputy Prime Minister Suthep Thaugsuban and Army Chief General Anupong Paojinda to stop protecting National Police Chief Police General Patcharawat Wongsuwan from being dismissed from his post. Sondhi claimed that Police General Patcharawat, a younger brother of Defense Minister General Prawit Wongsuwan, supported the red-shirt protesters and had failed to perform his duties properly when controlling the PAD rally last year. Sondhi says he does not believe the claims regarding the planning of the 2006 coup that General Pallop Pinmanee reportedly told Thaksin in Beijing last year. He dismissed the claim that General Pallop received only a pair of golf shoes from Thaksin in return for the information. Addressing General Pallop's claims directly, Sondhi said he used to visit the residence of Phee Malakul Na Ayutthaya , where the coup is alleged to have been plotted, but that a coup was never discussed. In fact, Sondhi said Phee told him to stop fighting Thaksin, and offered to mediate between the PAD and the Thaksin government to end the conflict. Sondhi also noted that Thaksin’s close aides, such as current Pheu Thai MP Chalerm Yoobamrung and former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat , used to visit Phee’s home as well. |
