Arson at 35 Spots Last Night

Adviser to the Bangkok governor Thanom Onketpol said a total of 35 sites were torched. Shopping malls which were earlier torched still see fire igniting. They include Center One at Victory Monument, an 8-storey building on Siam Square Soi 4 and 5, Central World and Big C Ratchadamri.

The Center for the Resolution of Emergency Situation has ordered security forces to use armored vehicles, rubber bullets and live rounds during this evening's operations to disperse the red-shirt demonstration in Ratchaprasong area. Chaos broke out since around 7.30 P.M. when sound of explosions were heard at Saladaeng intersection and later reports surfaced that Major General Katthiya Sawasdiphol or Seh Daeng, a key leader of red-shirts' armed units has been shot.

On 26 February 2010, from 13.00-21.00 hrs., the panel of nine judges of the Supreme Court’s Criminal Division for Persons Holding Political Offices sat on the bench and read the ruling on the case filed by the Office of Attorney-General against Pol. Lt. Col. Thaksin Shinawatra requesting that assets worth 76,621,603,061.05 baht, together with the interests accrued therefrom, become property of the state, on the grounds that these assets were acquired inappropriately through acts constituting a conflict between personal and public interests, thereby constituting unusual wealth.

The 76 billion baht assets seizure case of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has wind down to a close. TAN Network takes a look at the background of the case.   The case has been one of the great controversies for the Thai society as both his supporters and opponents number in the millions. Fugitive former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra's supporters have been, for the past several years, trying to prove his innocence and restore his power. His opponents, on the other hand, have been trying to prove his guilt and keep him away from politics. Because of these controversies, many Thais have chosen sides and thus, conflicts have occurred at every level of the society. The extreme difference of opinions has led to several confrontations and even to the deaths of his opponents and supporters alike at the hands of one another.
