The finance minister plans to spend part of his expected short time in office to work for the poor and will oversee the halted online lottery sale by himself. Finance Minister Suchart Thadathamrongvech, who continues to be a prime target for criticism, said that he expects to hold his post for only a short period of time. He said that while he remains in office, he pledges to work to serve the people of Thailand, especially the poor, by pursuing policies that enable them to earn more income and continuing the Thaksin government's SML village fund and OTOP projects. He denied that he is trying to continue the so-called populist policies to prepare a voter base for the next general election. Suchart added that he has already delegated all responsibilities to his deputies, with Pradit Phattharaprasit to be in charge of the Customs Department and Revenue Department and Ranongrak Suwanchawee to be in charge of the Comptroller General's Department and the Excise Department. Suchart, himself, has decided to supervise the Government Lottery Office, the Fiscal Policy Office, the Public Debt Management Office, and the Office of State Enterprise and Government Securities. He stated that the ministry will wait for legal clarification on the planned introduction of the online lottery sales before it can pursue the project. Meanwhile, acting GLO director, Wanchai Surakul said he will ask the GLO committee to look at the pending online lottery sales on October 8, after the Council of the State earlier refused to give further legal interpretation of the relevant laws. |
