Pipob: PAD to Rely on VDO Evidence of Oct 7th to File Charges against Govt
UPDATE : 16 October 2008

Pipob Thongchai, a key People's Alliance for Democracy leader, reveals the names of the government’s October 7th committee have been changed to benefit the premier. He added that the PAD will rely on raw VDO clip footage of the Black Tuesday incidents to file charges against the government with the court.

Last night PAD leader Pipob Thongchai took the PAD stage and spoke at length about the incidents that took place on October 7th. He said the government and the police are currently collecting evidence and interviewing witnesses about the teargas attacks last week. But Pipob claimed that the authorities are currently attempting to shift the blame to former Deputy Prime Minister General Chavalit Yongchaiyudh.

Police will also claim that they were unaware the teargas which were used against the protesters were of weapon-grade and are potentially fatal.

The government has set up two separate committees to investigate the cause of the violence that broke out and to rehabilitate those who have been injured.

Pipob questioned the independence of the investigative committee headed by Preecha Panichwong, a former vice president of the Supreme Court.

Preecha was initially given the power to recommend members to be appointed to the committee. But the PAD leader alleged that the names of at least two members of the committee, who were recommended by Preecha, were rejected by the government. Consequently the freedom and integrity of the committee has been questioned by the PAD.

Instead of relying on the committee, the PAD will rely on the evidence it has collected and file separate charges to the courts, the National Human Rights Commission, the National Counter Corruption Commission and the Opposition’s investigative committee.

Currently the PAD is collecting both graphic and VDO evidence from various sources. The materials will later be submitted as evidence to the court. Charges will most likely be filed against the premier and any Cabinet ministers who were involved in authorizing the crackdown.

With regards to former PM Thaksin Shinawatra’s bid to seek political asylum in the U.K., Pipob said the U.K. PAD will present the British authorities with evidence against allowing Thaksin to seek refuge in the country. He also requested the U.K. PAD to examine if Thaksin’s sale of the Manchester City Football Club was more than a simple business transaction. The PAD leader believes the sale could in fact be an attempt to launder money.
