Opposition Delays Probe into Black Tuesday to Let Govt Focus on Border Conflict
UPDATE : 16 October 2008

The Democrat Party has announced that it will delay its investigation into the government’s use of teargas against the People's Alliance for Democracy protesters to allow the administration to focus on solving the Thai-Cambodian border conflict.

Opposition leader Abhisit Vejjajiva gives his moral support for the armed forces, officers of the Foreign Affairs Ministry and those who are involved in dealing with the Thai-Cambodian border conflict. He announces that the Opposition will delay its probe into the government’s crackdown on the PAD protesters on October 7th to allow the administration to focus solely on solving the border crisis.

As the Opposition, Abhisit says the Democrat party is willing to help the government in anyway to help explain the situation to the international community. He says Thailand must do all it can to ensure that the international community is aware that Thailand did not provoke the confrontation. Abhisit adds that the conflict should only be resolved via bilateral dialogues.

He stresses that Cambodia is obligated to give an explanation on the recently planted landmines and the hostile threat it issued to demand the withdrawal of Thai troops, prior to yesterday's clash.

Commenting about the meeting between government coalition partners last night, Abhisit says he’s disappointed at the trivial focus of the meeting. The gathering allegedly focused on discussing ways for the government to remain in office and fail to concentrate on other urgent issues of national importance.

Abhisit also reveals that the Democrat Party intends to boycott the Constitution amendment committee meeting today. He’s also challenged the premier to stand by his earlier statement that the government will not go ahead with amending Article 291 of the charter if any political party disagrees with the move.

Amending Article 291 will pave the way for the creation of a constitution drafting assembly. The creation of the CDA is the government’s hope to gain the support to justify various clauses of the charter. This move is being ferociously objected by the People’s Alliance for Democracy, which believes the government will use the CDA to amend the charter to benefit former premier Thaksin Shinawatra and the People Power Party.
